Tips

Teams: 8 things that can go wrong.

Nº 5. Personality clashes

Sometimes, two team members dislike each other a lot. They cannot communicate without generating friction with each other, or they need to work in completely environments. One needs structure, processes and reflection, while the other prefers spontaneity, noise and debate. Both may needed in a particular team.

If you are the team leader, the first thing to do is find out the cause. If it is a conflict of interests or has historical roots, then go back to number 4 and look at the suggestions.

If it is a question of temperament, then try the following:

  • talk to each person individually, outside of the team context, and see what suggestions they have to move forward.
  • define their roles and resposibilities as clearly and as separately as possible.
  • help them to stay out of each other's way, without disrupting the team. Take some practical steps: make sure their desks are not too close together, if you have social events, don't make too intimate

Very few team objectives are impossible to achieve just because a couple of people don't like each other. Taking a "softly, softly" approach can allow mutual respect to develop, even if personal friendship remains out of the question.

We will look at the remaining 3 problems in future newsletters. This information and advice is focused on team working, but is also of much wider application in our day-to-day lives.

Humour

This video was made at the time of the American Presidential campaign in 2004: This land is my land...

Can you help us with an internal discussion that we have been having over the years?

We have some really funny videos in our archives, but some of them have a couple of problems. Either they are quite difficult or the language and content is more "down-to-earth". Nothing to cause shock or distress, but possibly not to everyone's taste. The question is, should we have a special section for this type of humour or should we forget it and keep things simple and "correct"? What do you think? Drop me a line and we will see what the general opinion is.

Programs

You can improve your English with us

Here we are, another New Year is with us again. For many people it is the moment to make resolutions, again, and to start some kind of training or learning program. As always, with a fervent desire for it to work for once.

For many of you, that program is an English learning program.

Wouldn't it be nice to know that this time:

  • you will get concrete results
  • time and scheduling will not be a problem
  • it will be fun, interesting and pertinent to you
  • others will be able to notice your improvement

Two of the major problems people face are

  1. No time.
  2. Too far from a training centre.

Santiago, Nuria and Maria Rosa can't take much time away from their desk. They are busy people. What do they do? A twenty minute PhonePill session between 4 and 8 times a week.

In fact, Nuria has been doing this for more than a year now, with truly remarkable results.

What about you? Call us to have a chat about your particular needs and goals.

Call Albert or Diego on 93 238 71 40.

Welcome back to work and I look forward to hearing from you sometime.

Kind regards,
Albert
