Lydia's Top Tips - January 2004
One of our clients was recently invited to speak on television, so he asked me for some advice and tips. Here's what I told him…
TV chat shows, interviews and video conferencing are common place now. More and more companies are using all aspects of TV and video communications. Consequently the possibility of you speaking in front of a camera is increasing daily.
When that day arrives, you will be under close scrutiny. If you do not speak in a competent and professional manner, your career path could be in trouble.
The simplest way to avoid "a first camera appearance" fiasco is to be prepared. Most people who are relaxed and comfortable in meetings and presentations often become nervous when first exposed to a TV or video interview. To perform well on camera you must practise.
To be successful you must rehearse until your performance becomes relaxed and second nature. You must lose your self-consciousness so that you are completely free to concentrate on the content of your presentation or interview and not on your non-verbal signals.
Television is more intimate visually and orally. You are at close-up range so you don't have to project your voice. Body movement and facial expressions are magnified so it's important to be relaxed and make smooth gestures.
It is vital to develop your self-confidence through practice, positive self-talk and visualisation techniques.
Here are some guidelines to help you:
- Likeability on TV is more important than anything else. Relax and smile.
- TV magnifies movement. Don't make any fast moves. Use less body energy and slow down your eye and head movements on close-ups. Breathe slowly.
- The camera records all of your verbal and non-verbal signals. Be yourself and tell the truth. The camera doesn't lie.
- Get enough air into your lungs before you speak. This adds projection to your voice and helps you sound good.
- Dress in solid colours. Men should shave closely.
- If you use a teleprompter it is important to lead the text - do not follow! The speed of the text display is based on your lead. Remember to smile, gesture and pause naturally.
And finally remember a positive reaction always gives a positive result.
Enjoy the moment!
