An Overview of the Chamber

London Chamber of Commerce and Industry International Qualifications (LCCIQ) is the leading international awarding body for business English language awards, with over 100 years experience in providing valued business-related qualifications.

With over 8000 centres in more than 126 countries around the world, the LCCIQ examines over 500,000 candidates a year. LCCIQ qualifications are recognised internationally by employers, professional bodies and universities.

The History of the Chamber

In 1881 the London Chamber of Commerce was established and quickly recognised the need for improved commercial and technical education alongside advanced foreign language courses. The Commercial Education Committee of the London Chamber of Commerce was then appointed in 1887, and held the first LCCI examinations in the same year.

Changes in the structure of industry in Europe rapidly increased the need for employees with clerical and commercial skills. LCCIEB identified and responded to this demand with qualifications designed to assess a candidate’s relevant abilities. These qualifications were very different from the traditional academic training of universities and colleges by focusing entirely on vocational skills.

In 1898 plans were made to expand overseas and the first examinations were held in Bombay. By 1928, LCCIEB examinations were held in countries from Jamaica and Shanghai to Africa and Western Europe. In 2004 LCCIEB transitioned into LCCI International Qualifications in association with world leaders in educational assessment EDI in move to keep abreast of the ever changing world of business, communication and technology. Today there are over 8000 acknowledged LCCIQ Centres across 86 countries internationally, with numbers increasing continuously as we respond to growing demand in new and existing markets.
